The DASH Diet and Metabolic Syndrome

Published by at 1:05 pm under For the Love of Food Diet,Health

We know the Dietary Approach to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet, a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, improves blood pressure but can it help with metabolic syndrome,  a collection of health risks including elevated blood sugar, and triglyceride that increase the chance of a heart attack or stroke?  The answer is yes.

Over 6 months volunteers were fed the DASH diet, a control diet or a weight reduction diet.  Relative to the control diet the DASH dieters were able to raise their good cholesterol, lower their blood pressure, blood sugar and triglyceride levels and even lose weight. The weight loss diet was almost as good; it lowered triglycerides, blood pressure and led to weight loss too. The researchers concluded the DASH diet not only improves blood pressure it improves  metabolic syndrome as well, an important factor in the fight against heart disease.
