Is a cereal fruit bar a good snack?

Published by at 10:20 pm under Health,Uncategorized,Weight Control

All three snacks pictured above carry an equal number of calories, but only one is likely to fill you up. Can you guess which one will control hunger best?

A cereal bar with fruit filling is more like eating a slice of toast with jam on it then it is eating a piece of real fruit. Look at the ingredients on the label. If high fructose corn syrup is the first ingredient in the list of filling ingredients it means it carries more sugar than fruit. If you chose to snack on these or make them part of your meal I would count them as one and one half slices of bread, and I put these in the “dry” food category

A fruit filled cereal bar is not likely to be as filling as eating a real piece of fruit and worst of all it replaces real fruit which can actually help you control appetite, lose weight and prevent all sorts of food related diseases.  To be well nourished you will want to eat a piece of real fruit- it could be fresh, frozen or even in a can ( or individual fruit cup) with light syrup.

Eileen, great idea to make a visual demonstration! I find this terrifically helpful. I have a food scale, per your suggestion, but I have not experiemented to this degree. I don’t typically eat cereal bars but I do like the Kashi brand bars. It never would have occured to me to equal a cereal bar to a slice of bread with jelly on it. WOW. Thank you for the education.
