Snacks for New Moms

It may sound crazy but hunger is the enemy of anyone who wants to eat well and lose weight. Hunger leads to overeating and poor food choices. Just observe the quality of what you eat when you are “starving.” Of course overeating can happen to anyone but new mothers are particularly at risk because they put lots of energy and care into the new baby and not much into taking care of themselves. If you open the cupboard and find nothing but salty, fatty crackers or the refrigerator is full of leftover cake or macaroni and cheese you are setting yourself up for problem eating, and this is even more troublesome if you skip meals too, new moms who skip meals  overeat because they are too hungry to make good choices.

Now is the time to start good food habits. To prevent the cycle of under then over-eating simply eat regularly and never get hungry. Snacking on fruit, vegetables, cheese sticks, and yogurt tends to be filling and self-limiting, whereas “dry” salty foods like chips, pretzels, and crackers never quite lead to fullness because they contain very little water. Foods that have a high water tend to promote fullness. When choosing a snack think “wet” not “dry” and avoid extremes in hunger. Practice this tip now and you will have a lifetime of good health and your baby, once he starts on food  will be making smart choices too.

My favorite “wet” snacks for new moms include:

  • Fruits such as apples, applesauce, oranges, melon or any fruit without added sugar
  • Vegetables such as carrot and celery sticks, grape tomatoes, sliced peppers
  • Hard boiled egg, cooked chicken, low fat yogurt, low fat cheese sticks, low fat cottage cheese
